BJ COLE: PEDAL STEEL

‘BENDING NOTES LIKE TOFFEE’

In a career stretching back to the mid-Sixties, BJ’s recording credits read like a 'who’s who' of music. He has carved an outstanding reputation as the supreme innovator on the pedal steel; adapting it across numerous genres of music.
His uniquely eclectic style of playing first made an impact on the British music scene in the early 1970's. His iconic performance on Elton John's classic 'Tiny Dancer' put him in place as the go-to pedal steel player for numerous major artists and bands who desired his unique sound on their tracks. BJ COLE and EMILY BURRIDGE

DUETS FOR PEDAL STEEL GUITAR and CELLO

When BJ Cole and Emily Burridge perform together they produce a dynamic energy created out of their complimentary musical perspectives. Emily, a classically trained virtuoso Cellist with a talent for improvisation honed to spontaneous perfection by the demands of top flight session work and BJ, whose session CV confirms his conviction that the pedal steel guitar is long overdue for a re evaluation as an orchestral instrument that demands a sophisticated repertoire.

GNOSSIENNE SUITE

Although BJ Cole and Emily Burridge have had several of Erik Satie's Gnossiennes in their repertoire for some time, it was only when they had the idea of performing the complete cycle that it became clear that the pieces should evolve in the form of a suite, and to this end they have composed musical passages that link the individual 'miniatures' and create a sense of momentum through the whole work. BJ Cole's Pedal Steel and Emily Burridge's cello bring out a lyrical quality in Satie's music that is not possible to express in the standard piano interpretations; and undercurrents of Eastern European music clearly emerge as an influence on Satie's original compositions. Also, the idea of the individual Gnossiennes as movements in a suite gives added weight and substance to the whole, and allow a new appreciation of Satie's unique musical genius. The ‘Gnossienne Suite’ has been remixed and remastered and is now sounding better than ever.  The Gnossienne Suite is a featured part of BJ Cole and Emily Burridge's concert programme.
