In a career stretching back to the mid-Sixties, BJ’s recording credits read like a who’s who’ of music. He has carved an outstanding reputation as the supreme innovator on the pedal steel; adapting it across numerous genres of music.
His uniquely eclectic style of playing first made an impact on the British music scene in the early 1970's. His iconic performance on Elton John's classic 'Tiny Dancer' put him in place as the go-to pedal steel player for numerous major artists and bands who desired his unique sound on their tracks. With a script remarkably true to Annie Proulx's 1997 short story, this adaptation tells the story of Ennis Del Mar (Lucas Hedge) and Jack Twist (Mike Faist) as rangers who have an ill-fated relationship between 1963 and 1983.
Directed by Jonathan Butterell, written by Ashley Robinson and with original music by Dan Gillespie Sells the band is led by the wonderful Eddi Reader as the Balladeer, Meelie Traill (upright bass), Greg Miller (harmonica) and BJ Cole (pedal steel guitar).
This was performed in Soho Place, a fantastic theatre 'in the round' in the West End.

"Here, those visuals are replaced by a score of country and bluegrass songs by Dan Gillespie Sells, performed by Eddi Reader (formerly of band Fairground Attraction) as a balladeer, fronting an onstage band in which BJ Cole’s pedal steel guitar is resonantly prominent."
Sam Marlowe, The Stage
"...delivered by a terrific onstage band with Scottish singer-songwriter Eddie Reader on vocals, Greg Miller on harmonica and BJ Cole on pedal steel guitar." Sarah Hemming, The Financial Times
"A herd of achingly lovely country ballads are shepherded into our affections by a soulful-voiced, guitar-strumming Eddi Reader and small band, set beside the stage." Dominic Cavendish, The Telegraph
"Eddi Reader’s voice is as rich, smoky, and earthy as the whisky that the men constantly inhale, and she’s brilliantly matched by Greg Miller’s plaintive harmonica, Sean Green’s lush piano, Meelie Traill’s sonorous bass, and the legendary BJ Cole on pedal steel guitar."
